Project of a middle school in “Monteroni d’Arbia”, Siena

The conformation of the area of ​​intervention, the available spaces, the urban context and the activities to be carried out as dictated by the preliminary design document, meant that the design idea fell on the construction of two independent and closely connected complexes. The first one will host all the didactic and administrative activities, with decommitments which also function as spaces of relationship, while the second complex all the collective activities. The open spaces and in particular the project “square”, located between the two complexes, with its steps and the extension of the same up to the intersection with Via Bruno Buozzi, well connect the different specificities, ensuring the possibility of carrying out collective activities in the open air, at the theater, or when the boys meet. These spaces, furnished and illuminated, can give the entire urban context, essentiality, decorum and the possibility of using them even in the evening, organizing any markets and other interesting representations. In the spaces available, which are part of the area serving the entire school complex, ample parking spaces have been provided for the teaching staff, administrative employees and staff in general, accompanying children, as well as for school buses. Overall, the design of the complexes is articulated, so as to embrace the surrounding space, so as to transform the external space into an internal space belonging to the school and the public. The windows that surround the “buildings”, the verandas and those in particular overlooking the “square”, they make clear the compositional approach that gave rise to the idea of ​​the project. The two complexes that make up the “building” are arranged on two levels. The upper floors are served by large stairwells and elevators.

The hallway spaces (corridors) of the classrooms, laboratories and others, become spaces of communication and relationship in the project for the students of the complex. All the designed environments are made accessible to the disabled, through the installation of lifts, ramps and appropriately sized spaces (bathrooms, hallways, etc. …). The main entrance area (the fouyer) of the complex, intended for teaching and administrative activities, is configured at double height and represents the key and welcoming element, first external and then internal. The parking space of the school buses, very close to the “buildings”, guarantees safe access for children, school and collective activities. Access to the project “square” will therefore be reserved for school buses. From the “small square” the paths that connect the complex that houses the canteen, the library, the lecture hall and the environment for sports activities for elementary school children wind with the one specifically intended for educational and administrative activities. The idea of ​​dividing the didactic activities from the collective ones certainly favors the peaceful development of the didactic activities, also avoiding the compression of the spaces and giving the “hallways” the function of spaces of relationship, as befits a modern conception structure. The full-height cylindrical struts of steel painted in bright colors and places inclined with respect to the edge of the facades, the large glass walls, the double heights present in the “buildings” and the bending and sinuous roofs, protected by a copper “mantle” green, give the complexes the necessary sobriety and a balanced insertion of the artefacts in the urban context, avoiding the visual impact, which is not infrequently causing the new buildings in a pre-established context.
